Snow is falling and sticking on the ground. We have been lucky in that there have been mild days still here and there and often plenty of sun. There have been no days since I last posted where driving was affected in any meaningful way.
Right now it is 24 and cloudy. This morning it was nice and bright but cold.

Winter is Here!
Yesterday, we finally got a real taste of winter. The snow came down heavy and it was blowing. I think we had 6+ inches. Driving into work at 6:30 AM was not super easy, but with my winter tires I did not slide around. I also was not a speed demon.
In Monroe County you can see the different levels of snow removal in each town. When I drive to work, I drive through at least three towns: Penfield, East Rochester (an independent village) and Perinton. Penfield, by far, has the best snow removal. They use salt liberally and roads are clear even if there is a lot of snow and it is cold. Perinton at times seems as if they don't bother plowing and just put sand on top at times. Every time we have a lot of snow, I dread driving in Perinton the most.
It seemed as if the snow would never be cleared out looking through my office window but by the time I left to go home the roads were almost completely clear.
Yesterday was the first day where driving was an issue. Still, the experience wasn't so bad.
Today, some breaks of sun, colder, and a little more snow. Roads look generally clear though.

Still Little Snow
So after the cold spell, we still have not had much snow. Last couple of days the highs were close to 50. Today, there was a dusting of snow on the grass but none stuck to the road and all has now melted.
Next few days it will remain mild. There is talk that more snow will be coming later in the month, but we will have to see.
People keep telling me that perhaps we will get paid back with a late end to winter. I think there is little connection between how soon the weather hits hard to when it ends, but maybe I am wrong.
Still no affect on driving and no need for the driveway to be plowed or cleared.

Cold, But Little Else
Yesterday, all of the local newscasts led with the story that it would be cold and snowy last night and today. Arctic air was moving in across the warm lake, leading to a lot of lake effect snow. Over a foot was likely.
Instead, snow barely covered the grass. Maybe we got three inches. The roads were clear all day. It was bitter cold (getting down into the single digits), but life went on.
Still an easy winter so far.

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to everyone! It was a very uneventful one weather wise for those of us in the Rochester area. No snow and mild weather. Towards the end of New Year's Day it did get gray and windy. We woke up to partly sunny skies and snow covering the lawn.
Tonight and tomorrow is a different story. There is a lake effect snow warning with potential snowfall of up to 10 inches through the early afternoon. And it will be cold (high near 18), making it difficult for the salt to easily melt the snow. This might be the first day that the snow affects my driving. I have my snow tires on but they are now about 5 years old and likely have lost a lot of their good tread.
I will keep all my loyal readers posted.

Been Awhile
So, I have neglected this blog for awhile. *Sorry*
I was out of town from Christmas until now. Where I was (elsewhere in upstate) I encountered a white Christmas with limited snow that melted before lunchtime. I understood it snowed a bit on Wednesday while I was gone, but that it was nothing substantial. Any snow that did fall that day has since melted. Although it looks cold at times next week (high of 12 with snow on Tuesday!), nothing substantial seems to be on the horizon. I will keep you all posted.

No Snow Since Sunday
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday have come and gone with no snow. It has been cold in the mornings, but temperatures have been getting up into the high 40s and low 50s at time. There will be breaks of sun followed by heavy winds and rain. Still better than having snow slow me down, I think. There may be a white Christmas though and snow is in the forecast for Friday.
